Is Gum disease causes heart attacks?
Our body gives signals in form of simple infections
mentioning big problems our body has to face in the future.
Its been a shockingly surprising observation for me, in
recent years, study after study has shown that, people with poor oral health (
like gum disease and teeth loss ) causes high rate of heart attacks or strokes than
people with good health .
How
is gum disease connected with heart disease?
There are so many studies and theories purposed on
that particular topic,
● In our mouth, there is a bacteria that can infect gums
and cause gingivitis and periodontics can travel to blood vessels.
elsewhere in the body and where they can be the reason
for blood vessel inflammation and damage, stroke, tiny blood clots, and even
heart attack may follow.
● To prove this idea, remnants of oral bacteria have been
found in atherosclerotic blood vessels far from the mouth.
● Even antibiotic treatment has not been proven as an
effective treatment to mitigate the risk of cardiovascular risk.
● On the other side rather than the bacteria, it's also
about the immune system. If the immune system is not strong enough to repel the
bacteria then it can damage the brain and heart as well.
● Gum disease and cardiovascular disease are directly
proportional but it only happened to those who are less careful about their
health and diet, for instance, there is also a third party or factor such as
smoking, lack of diet and especially oral health care can lead to this dead-end
of vessel inflammation and heart attack.
Researches/studies
regarding the relation between gum disease and heart ;
There are so many studies done to find out the
correlation between these two, researchers analyzed data of more than a million
people who Experienced more than 65,000 cardiovascular diseases (including
heart attack) and found that,
● After age accounting, there was a correlation found
between tooth loss and heart attack moderately.
● While when smoking was considered, the connection
between tooth loss and cardiovascular disease was largely
disappeared.
so this study suggested that oral health is not directly
connected to cardiovascular disease. And when smoking was considered it was
completely leading to other results.
So there are oral infection and other factors that can
cause cardiovascular issues. But if this is true that Gum disease is directly
affecting the heart than what other studies have purposed. So other studies are
needed to sort this out.
Something to be noted ;
Wait there is something more to be considered, as if,
poor oral health is not directly affecting cardiovascular then is there any
other thing that happened?
The connection between poor oral health may need to be
only connected to cardiovascular disease or overall health but can also cause
many other issues.
Studies have also linked periodontal disease, especially
if due to infection with bacteria ( called Porphyromonas gingivalis ) and
rheumatoid arthritis. And in 2016, this same bacterial infection was linked to
pancreatic cancer risk.
However, its relation with heart disease needs some more
studies to find ou lt more satisfactory answers.
Cautions:
But if this is true somehow then good care of oral health
should be a priority.
Regular dental care can help the reduction of tooth loss.
Smoking should be avoided.
Even if it is not connected to heart disease, but it will
turn out to have many other benefits though much of them remain speculative.
More
studies of oral health and overall health, but still then , keep brushing,
flossing, and seeing to your dentist.
